Welcome to the site! Ask lots of questions. Do lots of reading and listening. Find somebody nearby who can help you (aka an "Elmer").

See if there's a ham club in your area.

Check at the local radio shop if you have one.

Will an antenna work in an attic with a metal tin roof

Maybe. Would be better outside of course, away from any metal (metal at the base of the antenna is fine; ie. the antenna is above the metal). If you have to mount the antenna inside the attic with metal above or in close proximity, check the match with an SWR meter.
